CLEVELAND -- University Hospitals confirms one person has died from a hypothermia-related illness as a result of the extreme cold.

A spokesperson for UH says an elderly patient died of hypothermia but did have other medical problems that were contributing factors.

One other elderly patient was treated in the ER for hypothermia as well.

No other information is being released at this time.

Hypothermia occurs when the body's core temperature drops dangerously low.

People can become disoriented, confused and lethargic, and eventually the central nervous and heart and vascular systems start shutting down.
