Drivers at a Lake County shopping mall got the surprise of their lives when a crane came crashing down onto their cars.
It happened Thursday morning at the Points East Plaza in Mentor.
Looking at the damage, it's hard to believe that no one was crushed when the crane came crashing down.
Phil Coberly was sitting inside his car getting ready to visit his wife in the hospital when the crane topped over.
"I heard a noise, and I looked up, and I seen the crane come over, and it hit the rear of my car and missed me by maybe five feet," said Coberly.
Buckeye Crane and Rigging was installing a heating unit on the roof above Marc's.
Investigators are looking into what that caused the crane to fall -- from strong winds to operator error.
The accident totaled eight cars -- leaving a hazardous spill in the parking lot.
"We were concerned with the oils and stuff running out of the vehicles. We did some absorbance and other things," said Joe Busher with Mentor Fire Department.
Tow trucks removed the damaged cars while crews worked to lift the crane.
"As busy as this plaza is, we are very lucky that nobody got injured in the event," said Busher.
Coberly is counting his blessings.
"Yes I am, yes I am. The Lord was with me. Thank you," said Coberly.
OSHA and Mentor police are investigating.
They say all the equipment will be tested before they can determine a cause of the crash.
