CANTON -- Nine people managed to escape early this morning after three neighboring homes caught fire in a Canton neighborhood.

The Canton Fire Department says a home on 5th Street NE caught fire just before 2:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived flames were shooting out the windows.

The fire ignited the homes on either side of the burning house as well. Fire investigators say all three homes were destroyed.

The American Red Cross is helping the nine people – seven adults and two children – displaced by the fire.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the fire. They were treated and released at the hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
