KENT -- It was the day they've been training for. From television to print to digital and social media, every student knew they had a job to do when breaking news happened.
Kent State University's student-run media department was the lifeline of communication to not only the campus but also the community. But their reach spread even further.
"To know that you've been picked up by BuzzFeed news and USA Today, that's incredible," says Jacqueline DeMate, managing editor of Kent Wired, the student-run website.
Gabriel Kramer is the general manager of TV2, and the senior says the campus gunman is the biggest story he's covered so far, but he feels ready for the real world.
"The job got done because of what I learned here, and I feel prepared. I feel like I know what I'm doing," Kramer says.
TV2 spent nearly three hours on air, but they also shared information on social media, such as Twitter and Facebook. The coverage paid off. They gained hundreds of new followers and generated more than 13,000 page views on their website, which usually gets a quarter of that.
