CLEVELAND -- Detectives in the gang unit were investigating several shootings overnight when they found themselves involved in one.

It happened late Monday in the area of W. 25th and Marvin, according to Cleveland Police.

While touring the area because of overnight gunfire, detectives reportedly observed two men on foot -- one of which police recognized due to a felony warrant for his arrest.

As detectives approached, the wanted man fled on foot, ignoring verbal commands to stop. Police say two detectives later opened fire and shot the man when he pulled out a weapon.

The 25-year-old suspect was arrested and a loaded handgun was recovered. He was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center for surgery. Authorities say he is in serious condition. It was not reported how many times the suspect was shot or the location of his wounds.

Both officers involved in the shooting will be placed on three days administrative leave.

The second man, 29, was found to have a loaded gun. He was arrested without incident.

Neither suspect's name has been released.
