BAY VILLAGE, Ohio -- A fund for the family of the man found dead after attempting to rescue a female from Lake Erie has been established.

Authorities are calling 43-year-old Pete Radke of Medina "a hero". He was found dead about 3.5 hours after the search began.

Rescuers found one girl a couple hours after the search started. The rescued victim was taken to St Johns Medical Center for treatment. Her condition is still not known at this time.

Peter Radke Memorial Fund was created by Brunswick High School alumni. His wife Michelle graduated from the school in 1985. Donations are being accepted for the fund at this link:

Officials say the Radke apparently went into the water before rescuers arrived to help find the girl who had gone missing just after 6 p.m. Saturday.

Rescue crews from multiple departments responded to the scene Saturday evening. Bay Village Fire Department is on scene and is being assisted by North Olmsted, Rocky River, Westlake, and Avon Lake.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter also assisted with the search.

Huntington Beach is part of Huntington Reservation which is owned by the Cleveland Metroparks.

Huntington Beach will have a life guard on duty beginning June 7th.
