AKRON -- The decades-long tradition is back again in Akron. It's time for the All-American Soap Box Derby.
While some preliminary festivities got underway Sunday, Monday is the opening ceremony that really kicks things off.
The opening ceremony is in Lock 3 in Downtown Akron, followed by a slate of late afternoon and evening activities.
As the name implies, the derby consists of young competitors and their homemade race carts that are only moved by the slope of a hill. The first derby was actually in Dayton in 1934, but moved to Akron the following year.
A week of festivities leads up to race day on Saturday, July 26.
